Imphal, January 19 2014 :
After FCI stopped shipping rice along Imphal-Dimapur highway due to monetary demands served by UG groups, rice stocks in Government godowns are fast depleting and the same commodity is on the verge of complete exhaustion.
Meanwhile, Union Food Minister KV Thomas is scheduled to inaugurate a regional office of FCI at Imphal January 22 .
It has been almost two months since FCI transporters stopped shipping in rice from Dimapur godown to Imphal because of monetary demands served by UG groups.
Now the total quantity of rice stocked in Government godowns has dropped below 3000 metric tonnes although there should be at least 20,000 metric tonnes of rice in stock at any time, informed a well placed source.
Rice is being shipped in along Imphal-Jiribam route but only three times in a month.
This is just 25 per cent of the State total requirement of rice.
If rice is not shipped in along Imphal-Dimapur for some more days, rice stock would soon drop to zero.

The FCI General Manager based at Dimapur wrote to the State Government a few days informing that FCI is unable to transport rice from Dimapur to Imphal.
It also sought intervention/assistance of the State Government.
FCI's letter was ambiguous as it did not spell whether they would stop transporting rice or the State Government should ship in rice under some arrangement of its own.
As such, the State Government has apprised the Government of India about the unfolding situation.
Chief Minister O Ibobi who is in New Delhi to attend a meeting of AICC has discussed the matter with officials of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
On the other hand, Union Food Minister KV Thomas would land at Imphal at 3 pm of January 22.He would inaugurate an FCI regional office at Imphal on the same day.
Ksh Thoiba has been already appointed General Manager of the FCI regional office.
Notably, the State Cabinet has agreed to opening the FCI regional office within the old Assembly complex.
