Kabo Leikai eviction HC restrains Govt

Taking a serious note of the eviction drive carried out by the State Government at Naga River Colony-Kabo Leikai, despite an earlier order to maintain status quo, the Manipur High Court has today restrained the State respondent from taking up any activities on the land in question.
Apart from the restraining order, the Manipur High Court has also processed contempt of Court proceedings against the Commissioner/Secretary Revenue of the Government of Manipur S Sunderlal and DC /Collector of Imphal East RK Dinesh for evicting the people despite the earlier Court's order to maintain status quo.
Advocate BP Sahu appeared on behalf of the petitioners, the evicted people of Naga River Lane-Kabo Leikai before the High Court today.
In a statement issued to the press today, the JAC Against Forced Eviction of Naga River Lane-Kabo Leikai said that after the State Government issued a notification under Section 4 of the Land Acquisition Act of 1894 and subsequent notification for construction of a 5 Star hotel on December 17, 2010, the people filed a petition challenging the Government's notification before the Manipur High Court.

After hearing both the parties, the High Court passed an order on February 19, 2013 to maintain status quo on the land in question, said the JAC.
However on May 20 this year, the State Government, in violation of the order of the High Court of February 19, 2013, razed all the buildings of the villagers to the ground and evicted them.
Aggrieved by the action of the State Government, the petitioners approached the High Court and filed a miscelleneous application (Case number MC (WP (C) No 117 of 2013 with a prayer to restrain the Government from any activities/excavation/construction work on the land/premises of the applicants.
After hearing both the parties today, the Court issued an order restraining the State Government from taking up any activities on the said land.
