Imphal, August 29 2013:
The Committee on Protection of Land in Border Fencing (CPLBF) today hailed Sayed Akbar-u-ddin, spokesperson, Ministry of External Affairs for his proposal to constitute a joint border working group and demarcate the Border Pillar No 76 on Indo-Myanmar border.
CPLBF said such steps have been taken up by the Ministry of External Affairs in favour of the voice of the people.
Sayed had said in New Delhi yesterday that the Ministry of External Affairs has put a proposal before Myanmar Government through India's Ambassador to Myanmar Goutam Mukhopadhya to set up a joint border working group to demarcate the controversial Border Pillar No 76 along the international line.
However, CPLBF claimed that there are a number of Border Pillars on Indo-Myanmar border which are considered as 'disputed pillars' .
It urged for a re-survey and a fresh demarcation of the border fencing citing the disputed pillars.
Criticising Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam who had insisted yesterday that the remarks made by Principal Secretary (Home) Dr J Suesh Babu on August 26 that the Indo-Myanmar Border Fencing was just a security barrier had nothing to do with the state Government, CPLBF said that there are video and audio recordings of the Principal Secretary's statement.
Gaikhangam had told reporters after attending Krishna Janmashtami celebration at ISCKON, Imphal that the statement of Dr Suresh Babu was seemed to be misquoted by the media or might be a mistake however he added the Government was looking into the matter.
It said the Principal Secretary (Home) had made the statement in the presence of Assam Rifles Brigadier, Commanding Officer, Chandel district Deputy Commissioner, Inspector General of Police (Intelligence), Autonomous District Council, Moreh and Chandel district Superintendent of Police.
