Drug abuse will subside gradually: Meinya

Imphal, June 26 2013: Lok Sabha MP Dr Th Meinya said issue relating to drug abuse and trafficking in the State would gradually subside if a sense of nationalism is inculcated among the younger generations in the right perspective.

The MP was speaking at the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking observance held today at Johnstone Higher Secondary School, Imphal.

While saying that it is unfortunate that many young boys and girls are prone to drugs abuse, Dr Th Meinya strongly stressed on the urgency to imbibe nationalism among the younger generations.

Expressing concern that drugs menace and insurgency are two major problems faced by the State, Dr Meinya further stressed on the need to boost the moral of the young minds to develop character, self-confidence, discipline besides imparting education on religion and culture.

While also noting the negligible presence of IAS officers from the State, he also exhorted the students of Johnstone Higher Secondary School to pursue career in bureaucracy.

He said the State would witness a positive change with the help of sincere bureaucrats.

The observance programme was organised by FINGO-DAP, Manipur Chapter in collaboration with Johnstone Higher Secondary School.

The programme was attended by the National President of FINGO-DAP India, Dr A Jayentakumar as the president while the guests of honour were W Chaoba Devi, principal of Johnstone Hr Sec School and Dr RK Lenin, Associate Professor of RIMS.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr Lenin said drug abuse and illicit trafficking cannot be tackled only by a section of the people while adding that it can be effectively controlled with the collaboration of police, civil society organisations, teachers, doctors, NGOs, etc.

Similar programme was also held at Slopeland Public School, Salt Village, Khongjom today.

The programme was organised by District Social Welfare Office, Thoubal in collaboration with FINGO-DAP Thoubal Chapter with the theme 'Make Health Your New High in Life, not drugs' .

Dr M Nara and Dr Ksh Manglem Singh, retd CMO attended the function as the chief guest and president respectively.

District Social Welfare Office, Tamenglong in partnership with Noney Bazar Board, IFORD, Noney Nishaband and allied organisations have also observed 'International day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking' at Noney Bazar, Tamenglong district today.

A press note issued by District Social Welfare Officer of Tamenglong stated that a mass rally participated by about 150 workers and members of the attending organisations and local volun- teers was organised as a part of the observance.

The rally was flagged off by Chairman Noney Bazar Board from Noney Police Station gate and arrived at the Noney town hall, venue of the main function.
