Imphal, March 26 2020:
Most of the general public, who mainly depend on private water tankers for their water supply, is starting to face difficulties during the COVID-19 lockdown as the private water tankers began to halt operation.
People are complaining that even when they offer higher price from the normal rate, they are still not able to get drinking water due to the lockdown.
On the other hand, many water supply plants functioning under PHED have stopped supplying water to public since sometime back.
Some consumers of Canchipur water supply plant said that they have not been getting any water from the plant since many weeks back.
They demanded immediate attention of the autho- rities concerned to look into why the water supply plant located within MU campus stopped supplying water abruptly and for long without giving any explanation.
Likewise, many are appealing to the State Government to ensure adequate water supply for the general public.
When asked about the inconveniences faced by private water tankers in providing water to the public, one employee who was present at the Porompat water supply told The Sangai Express that the number of private water tankers who come to collect water from the place, has dropped down dramatically due to the complete lockdown in the country and the State.
Normally, more than 50 water tankers used to come for filling drinking water from the water supply hub, but in the last two days, hardly 10 private tankers came, he said.
He clarified that they have not stop filling up water for the private tankers and further added that for now, the main priority has been given to the water tankers of Government and private hospitals in the State.
One of the locals living near the area, opined that owners of water tankers might have remained at their homes due to fear of the novel coronavirus and on account of the lockdown, despite the announcement made by the authorities concerned that all the essential works/services, including supply of drinking water, will be exempted.
The local further said that the Government must instruct water tankers to provide water properly and adequately to the needy persons during the lockdown.
