Rising organ disease cases highlight need for more donors, says Health Dir

Imphal, January 23 2026:
In view of increasing cases of kidney and liver diseases among the elderly, there is a need for more organ donors in the country, said Dr N Hemantakumar, Director, Health Services.
He made the statement at the inauguration of the three-day "Integrated ICU & Transplant Coordinator Training Workshop" organised by Mohan Foundation in collaboration with Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Porompat.
The event was held at the auditorium hall of JNIMS under the theme "Stronger Together" .
Addressing the gathering, the Health Director emphasized the need for potential organ donors and organ transplant coordinators to learn about the Transplantation of Human Organs Act (THOA), 1994 .
Stating that the lives of many people facing organ failure can be saved through organ donation, he maintained that the people of Manipur also need to be aware of organ donation and transplantation.
At the event, Professor Dr K Sholay Meitei, Urology and Transplant Surgeon, JNIMS shared the objectives of the workshop.
Notable dignitaries present include Professor Longjam Usharani Devi, Director, JNIMS as the functional president and Professor G Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director, RIMS; Dr Khundongbam Palin, Chairman & Managing Director, Shija Hospital & Research Institute and Lalitha Raghuram, Country Director, Mohan Foundation as the guests of honour.
