Imphal, May 03 2023:
The United Committee Manipur (UCM) has appealed to all civil society organisations and all legislators to come together and bring peace and normalcy in the State.
Addressing media persons at its Lamphel office in the evening, UCM president Joychandra Konthoujam said all COSs and the 60 legislators should come together as one and shed their differences for peace to prevail in the State.
He also appealed to the Government to provide shelter and protection for immediate relief to all whose houses have been burnt and are seeking shelter.
Joychandra said UCM is of the opinion that the present volatile and tense situation was born out of protests against Government's eviction efforts in reserved forest areas and ban of poppy cultivation.
While their protest is against the Government, innocent people are caught in the middle and hurt.
Burning and damaging houses of innocent people is a cowardly act and this is condemnable in the strongest terms, he said.
UCM has always been working for peace, unity and integrity.
If the rising tension is not contained with all CSOs and people of communities coming together as one, there may be communal riots which will have devastating impact, he added.
Individuals and organisations instigating the people must take sole responsibility if there is any loss of life due to the present situation, the UCM president said.
He reiterated that people whose houses have been burnt in Torbung, Churachandpur and other places should be given protection, shelter for immediate relief.
UCM general secretary W Second also urged all CSOs to stop working only in the interest of their respective communities and come together as one to solve the crises and bring normalcy in the entirety of the State.
