Imphal, May 26 2020:
Alleging that many poor tribal people are not getting essential services including rice and pulses distributed and sold under Government schemes, Federation of All Tribal Youth Clubs, Manipur (FATYCM) has urged the State Government to set up a separate Consumer Affairs Food & Public Distribution (CAF&PD) Department exclusively for the tribals of Manipur.
FATYCM in a statement claimed that many poor people and hill tribal NGOs, engaged in relief works, who had applied several times for purchase of items through Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) during COVID-19 lockdown to reach out to the needy were denied by the department concerned.
In order to ease the hardship being faced by the tribal people in the State during the Nationwide lockdown as well as to make administration more convenient in the days to come, "we urge the Government to set up separate CAF & PD Department exclusively for the tribals of Manipur under Article 14 of the Indian Constitution-Right to Equality," it said.
The step (separate CAF&PD Department) will ensure both hill and valley receive equal treatment regarding public distribution system.
This will also help curb problems and irregularities in public distribution system in the hill districts, said FATYCM.
