Bpr, April 30 2018:
Condemning the removal of 47 labourers (contract labour) working under two contractors of Loktak Project, Leimatak and Ithai Barrage under National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC), numerous members of Contract Labours Welfare Union NHPC Manipur unit (affiliated to All India Labour Welfare organisation, New Delhi) protested in front of Loktak project NHPC office today.
Organised by Contract Labours Welfare Union NHPC Manipur unit, several placards and slogans were raised by labourers and members of the union including, "We want justice", "Save labourers, we are human beings", "Stop violating upon contract labours", "We strongly condemn termination of labourers by contractors" etc, reports our correspondent.
Speaking to media persons, president of the union P Kumarjit Singh pointed out that the workers have been working under the company for more than 30 years and the sudden removal of 47 labourers, out of the total 451 labourers, under the two newly appointed contractors is extremely disappointing while questioning the intention of the authority concerned for executing such actions.
He asserted that such action is a complete violation of human rights and urged the authority concerned not to consider the labourers as items which can be used and thrown away later.
Pointing out that the movement is a matter of life and death for the labourers, they cautioned that stringent agitations will be taken up if the authority concerned neglect the plights of the labourers.
President P Kumarjit further cautioned that the issue will be brought to the State Govt and to the Centre's notice if the situation demands.
