Imphal, June 28 2013 :
Contract employees engaged in State-wide Area Network (SWAN) at Secretariat new building have threatened to launch cease work strike if the Government fails to clear their due salary for seven months at the earliest.
Speaking at a press conference held at Manipur Press Club, All Manipur State-wide Area Network Association convenor L Nilakanta said that various Government Departments may face problem in sharing information in case the contract employees resort to cease work stir.
He said that SWAN, which is being operated from Secretariat new building, is the backbone for e-governance in the State.
SWAN was launched in 2010 with 48 staff in an effort of the State Government to introduce e-governance in Manipur.
All Government important files and information are stored in SWAN so that these could be utilised and shared at the time of need by various Departments, he added.
SWAN is also providing connection sharing at district and block levels, he added.
Considering the importance of the contract employees of SWAN, he urged the State Government to clear their due salary for seven months at the earliest.
He opined that salary for these employees could not be paid in time as the State Government is unable to submit fund utilisation certificate to the Centre in time.
L Nilakanta also said that the Government must be responsible for any eventuality if the contract employees of SWAN launch cease work strike.
