Mysterious death of Reingamphy Awungshi: Delhi police set to register FIR after strong protest

After persistent demand by North East communities of Delhi, the Station House Officer of Malviya Nagar Police station, Vijay Pal agreed to register an FIR in connection with the suspicious death of a girl from Ukhrul on May 29 at her rented room in South Delhi.
At the time of filing this report, the case is being examined for putting an appropriate IPC section number.
Meanwhile, the body of Reingamphi Awungshi is still lying at AIIMs mortuary here.
The 21 year old girl was found dead in her room on May 29 in South Delhi.
While a complaint against rape and murder had been submitted to the Malviya Nagar police station on May 29 by relatives of the deceased, the Police had refused to register an FIR.

Moreover while the relatives and Delhi Northeast communities demanded that a copy of the post mortem report be handed over to them, the Police had insisted that the body be received for embalmment.
The police argued that since the case had been under enquiry under 174 IPC, the reason for registering an FIR is out of question.
The Investigating Officer told the relatives that the police cannot register an FIR without evidence.
Later in the day, about a hundred youth, including individuals, student bodies, employees, civil society, spearheaded by the Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong Delhi gathered at the police station protesting and demanding registration of an FIR.
After persistent demand for an FIR at around 9 pm, the SHO of Malviya Nagar Police station Vijay Pal agreed to register an FIR.
Reportedly after taking the body of (L) Awungshi in the afternoon of May 29, the Delhi Police had issued a statement (no mention of any name or designation) to the Delhi based National media the possibility of drug abuse and that the decayed body bore the marks of being eaten by rodents.
