Imphal, May 15 2016:
The Kangla Inat Phambei (KIP) has asserted that the Meiteis who are followers of Sanamahism should seek the status of religious minority.
A statement issued by KIP said that the demand is driven by a struggle for survival.
Enlistment of the Meitei in the ST category would infringe upon the interests and benefits of other ST, SC, OBC and minority communities.
Meitei people who follow Sanamahism have been always a religious minority.
Meiteis had attained a high level of civilization with rich traditions, culture and separate religion and language.
Meiteis were also quite advanced in philosophy, astrology, astronomy and they had well-defined social discipline.
The KIP decried that the incumbent Government has done nothing to preserve and promote Meitei indigenous culture and traditions.
