Imphal, October 25 2013 :
The CPI Manipur State Council, during a meeting held yesterday, decided to recommend their secretary Dr Moirangthem Nara as the party's candidate in the Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency in the forthcoming Lok Sabha election.
With CPI determined to contest the forthcoming on their own, several rounds of meetings held among Opposition parties to field a common candidate have been rendered futile.
Speaking to media persons at Irabot Bhavan here today, former Minister and CPI State election committee chairman N Mangi said that the party's state unit has recommended Dr M Nara as their candidate for the Lok Sabha election in the Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency.
In accordance to an intimation of the party's Central leaders to forward proposals for Lok Sabha candidates ahead of the party's National council meeting which would be held at Delhi from October 28 to 30, the State council held a meeting yesterday and unanimously agreed to recommend the name of Dr M Nara as CPI candidate in Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency.
The national council meeting would study about possibility of forming a secular, progressive Government at the centre exclusively by Left parties.
The issue of border fencing in Moreh sector of Indo-Myanmar border would be tabled at the meeting, Mangi said.
On being asked about the past efforts to field a common candidate of opposition parties, Mangi said that some efforts were put in to field a common candidate of opposition parties with the objective of defeating the two sitting Congress MPs.
But that did not mean all the opposition parties should be united.
Nonetheless, CPI has been working hard to make Dr Nara the common candidate as desired by opposition parties, Mangi told media persons.
To another query, Mangi categorically stated that CPI would not put up any candidate in Outer Manipur P/C.Notably, 12 individuals have already submitted their application forms seeking Congress tickets for the two Lok Sabha seats.
Out of them, four are vying of Congress ticket in Inner Manipur P/C and eight in Outer Manipur P/C.Those vying for Congress tickets in Inner Manipur P/C are sitting MP Dr T Meinya, K Saratchandra, L Tilotama and M Bishwarjit.
For BJP, Dr RK Ranjan and former candidate Y Indira are the frontrunners who are seeking party ticket for Inner Manipur P/C .
