Intl Mother Language Day observed at Manipur Press Club

Professor R Subakrishnan award was today conferred on ISTV Reporter Surendro and Impact TV Video Journalist P Bobo at International Mother Language Day celebration held at Manipur Press Club.
The celebration was jointly organized by Tribal and Endangered Languages Promotion Board and UNESCO Club, Manipur.
The function was attended by Prof Ch Yashwanta, Linguistics HOD of Manipur University, Leihaothabam Saratchandra, political analyst, Dr Ch Manglem Singh retired Professor and Obstetrics and Gynaecology HOD of RIMS, Dr Kh Aruna Devi, Associate Professor of Department of English of Oriental College, Y Rupachandra, Chief Editor of Imapct TV, N Rajendro, President of ICHAM, Md Alam Azad, Assistant Project Director of MOBEDS and Ambition Angthangmi, president of TELPD as presidium members.
Giving his keynote address, former chief resource person of Centre for Tribal and Endangered Languages (Language Bureau), Union Ministry of Human Resource and Development, Dr Chandramani said that the day was observed to protect and promote endangered languages.
He appealed to all sections of the society to speak their mother languages without any hesitation.
Dr Chandramani also said that even Manipuri language has become endangered now and it needs promotion.
Despite assurances given by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi, the State Government is yet to set up a Language Commission, he said.
He along with some concerned individuals met Union HRD Minister last month.
The Minister assured them to introduce a scheme for the protection, preservation and promotion of endangered languages.
This year's Professor R Subakrishnan award was conferred on ISTV Meinam Surendro for his news reports on revitalization of Chakpa language.
Impact TV P Bobo also received special jury award for wide media coverage of Langlai festival.
Lifetime achievement awards were also presented to the individuals who have been working on the protection of critically endangered languages and culture of the State.
