Imphal, July 02 2012:
Condemning the killing of three young men and injuring others of Sihai village in a clash with neighbouring village, the Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) expressed its deep condolence over the death of K Lyton, K Rawung and K Pamleiyo of Sihai village who were killed on June 30 at Phangrei, Ukhrul District.
Though acknowledging the longstanding land dispute between Sihai and Lunghar villages, the Press Liaison of the NPMHR (South) said in a press statement that what appeared to be premeditated violence and brutality that resulted in the killing of the three young men and gravely injuring others is absolutely uncalled for.
Urging the people from both villages to exhibit restraint and refrain from further violence, the NPMHR also appealed to the leaders and elders from both villages to exercise their collective wisdom in resolving the dispute and to prevail upon their respective villagers to abstain from violent means and acts.
NPMHR further asked Tangkhul civil societies and other organisations to help and assist both villages in finding peaceful means to settle the dispute which has the grave potential to flare up again.
'The incident has profoundly shocked and outraged the sentiments of people; NPMHR envisions a future generation who do not have to inherit such history of hate and conflict and prays that wisdom will prevail upon both villages,' the NPMHR statement said.
