A village Defence Force (VDF) volunteer who was hospitalised after being allegedly thrashed by a fellow volunteer on June 26 passed away at RIMS hospital.
At the same time, blaming the indifferent attitude of the police personnel present at the station for the incident, a JAC formed in connection with the incident has demanded the authority concerned to take fitting action against them.
Family source said that Okram Mani alias Athoi (35) s/o Lukhoi of Chajing Mamang Leikai, a VDF volunteer attached to City PS succumbed to injury yesterday around 4 pm at RIMS hospital.
Athoi was returning to his station from his home on June 26 around noon.
The next day, he was found in a critical condition at RIMS hospital.
Quoting the version of the victim, his sister-in-law, Okram (O) Chaoba said that Athoi was on duty at Alu Galli, Thangal bazar in the evening of June 26.He returned to the station after duty.
Athoi along with a fellow VDF volunteer, Suresh had a drink.
The two were engaged in a verbal duel.
Moment later, Suresh hit Athoi at his face after which he fell unconscious.
Again, Suresh kicked him at the stomach.
Athoi was found lying unconscious fully drenched by another friend, Somorjit.
He was then taken to the station where he vomited a number of times in the night.
The personnel present there had not paid any attention to him thinking he had vomited due to the drink, Chaoba said.
He was rushed to RIMS hospital the next day when his condition did not improve.
Acting on the information given by Somorjit, the family rushed to the hospital and gathered the information from him, Chaoba said.
Other than an injury mark on the lip, some of his teeth were broken.
Besides, a boot mark was found on his stomach, Chaoba said.
Athoi is survived by his wife and a 9-month old son.
His elder son of one and half years old had passed away some time back.
Bobby, brother of Athoi, submitted a written complaint to City PS in this regard.
Meanwhile, a JAC was formed during a public meeting held at Chajing Mamang Leikai Community Hall in connection with the incident.
Asserting that the incident had occurred due to negligence of the City PS, the JAC strongly demanded the authority concerned to take action within 24 hours.
The public meeting demanded the arrest of the culprit/s at the earliest.
The JAC further warned of launching intense agitation in collaboration with other organisations if the demands are not fulfilled within 24 hours.
