Lamka, January 28, 2012:
The state assembly election that was held today ended peacefully in the district with no substantial reports of violence in the six assembly segments here but repoll is imminent in two polling booths while an FIR was lodged against a Trinamool Congress candidate who took away the mobile phone used for photographing the electorates.
As reports of disturbances in some pockets of the town and its adjoining areas are doing the round, the Trinamool Congress candidate in Churachandpur AC allegedly entered the polling booth of 23/58 located at New Lamka JB School and took away the mobile phone used for recording the electors who have cast their vote.
On learning about the incident, DEO Jacintha Lazarus immediately went to the polling booth and summoned the candidate concerned to return the mobile phone, which the candidate duly complied.
The polling reportedly resumed thereafter with another mobile phone as the EVM was intact.
The DEO said an FIR was lodged against the candidate for his misconduct at the polling station.
Any action against him, if any, would have to be decided by the Election Commission of India.
Repoll according to officials was imminent in two polling booths - Chingmun in Vangai range of Tipaimukh AC and Phuoljang in Henglep AC.
In both cases the EVMs were reportedly damaged in mob violence with reports saying the former was due to a commotion between the electorate and the polling officials while circumstances leading to the extreme step in the later in still not clear.
As was anticipated, polling percentage in all the assembly segments appear to be much lower than the earlier elections as the use of cameras has significantly minimized the chances of multiple and proxy voting.
