More lend support to IGNTU students stir

Imphal, February 25 2015: Several tribal student bodies of Manipur have voiced their concern over the issues confronting Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Regional Campus Manipur.

According to a joint statement of Kuki Students Organisation (KSO) units of Imphal, Chandel, Churachandpur, Sadar Hills, Ukhrul, Zeliangrong Students Union, Manipur (ZSUM), Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS), Senapati District Students' Association (SDSA) and Naga Students Union, Chandel (NSUC), it was decided that the University would be constructed at Makhan village in 2009 as per the Act of the University.

"To this very day, the campus has been constructed but lacks functionality at the desired and expected level," these organisations stated.

According to the tribal student bodies, the University was considered to be a boon for the tribal populace of Manipur but the tribals have not been able to reap the benefits of having a Tribal University right in the heart of the tribal land of Manipur.

"A series of appeals from students of the Regional Campus and other tribal student bodies have fallen on deaf ears.

The Government of Manipur does not seem to have a sincere concern for the tribal populace judging by the rate of ignorance that they have displayed against all the genuine appeals made thus far," the statement added.

The joint statement said that All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM) and Kuki Students' Organization-General Headquarters (KSO-GHQ) have taken up the issue considering the point that the future of the students of the University and of all the tribal people of Manipur is at stake.

Both the apex tribal student bodies have come together to highlight the sorry state of affairs of the University's Regional Campus at Makhan.

"The subordinate units of both the apex bodies would like to show our support to the actions being taken up by them and endorse any forms of agitation that they initiate in order to address the one issue that seriously threatens the future of the tribal students of Manipur," it stated.
