International Day of Older Persons held

The International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) was observed today at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Palace Compound, Imphal with the theme Longevity Shaping the Future under the aegis of Social Welfare Department.
Around 500 older persons were presented with a shawl each on the occasion.
The observance function was graced by Social Welfare Minister AK Mirabai, MLAs RK Anand, Elangbam Chand and Kikhonbou Newmai.
Speaking at the occasion, AK Mirabai said various benefits were provided to older persons under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 .
She said any rape victim has also been provided benefits, although it may be a small amount, were provided under the scheme.
Mirabai also assured that every possible measure would be taken up to ensure the timely delivery/payment of benefits under the Old Age Pension scheme while urging the beneficiaries to cooperate with the department towards this end.
Conveying that the department would take necessary measures for the setting up of an Old Age Home, the Minister said any possible steps would be taken up for the welfare of the senior citizens with their advice and suggestions.
Maintaining that harassing older persons is not a good sign, she urged all concerned to shun the acts of harassing older persons as all are destined to become 'old' like them.
Although the department might not be able to implement all the welfare schemes, it would strive to take up all possible measures, Mirabai said while urging all concerned to inform the department about the presence of older persons who do not have any person to look after them.
MLA RK Anand said older persons are earthly god and organising a day for them in their honour is a blessing for all.
MLA Kikhonbou Newmai said that all those who obey and revered the words of the older persons would surely prosper and achieve greatness.
He called on all concerned to show respect to older persons and to treat them well.
Stating that older persons deserve a recreational place, MLA E Chand said a recreation place exclusively for the senior citizens would be set up within Kangla.
