Imphal, June 21 2020:
Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Y Khemchand has appealed to all the people in general and fellow politicians in particular to fight the COVID-19 pandemic collectively instead of creating political unrest.
Speaking to media persons during an inspection trip to the community quarantine centre opened at Azad Higher Secondary School, Yairipok, Khemchand pointed out that COVID-19 is a global issue and it is not confined to Manipur alone.
It is a matter of grave concern that people are now less cautious about the contagion when the number of positive cases has been soaring rapidly, Khemchand remarked.

Nonetheless, the number of people recovering from COVID-19 has also been increasing as a result of the dedicated efforts made by doctors, nurses, paramedical staff and police.
Still people need to be on guard against COVID-19, said the Speaker.
"It is rather unfortunate that one MLA berated and called me uncivilized in connection with the Rajya Sabha election held recently", Khemchand decried.
He asserted that no Speaker can act beyond the conduct of business and rules of procedure.
To a query on the no confidence motion moved by Congress party and its allies against him, the Speaker said that there is a legal provision for the same but it is only natural for the Assembly Secretariat to reject the motion if it is not backed by sound reasons.
To another query about disqualification of some MLAs just before the Rajya Sabha election while some others were spared, Khemchand maintained that it would be sub-judice to comment on it as the matter has already reached Court.
The Speaker extended monetary aid to the community quarantine centre in addition to edible items, face masks and hand sanitisers.
In response, Tulihal Zilla Parishad Member and BJP Mahila Morcha, State president K Inaocha conveyed gratitude to the Speaker.
