'Manipur has scope for development of fashion industry on ethnic apparels': CM

A vocational institute of the Apparel Training Design and Training Centre (ATDC) was inaugurated at the DIC complex, Porompat in Imphal East District here on Wednesday.
Chief Minister O.Ibobi, who graced the function as chief guest, said India is a large country, where around 500 million youths are striving for jobs.
Numerous organizations are providing skills training to young people to help them avail suitable jobs, he cited.
Next to agriculture, textile sector is the most employment generating sector in India providing jobs to 45 million people either directly or indirectly, he added.
Textile apparel industry produces 14% of whole national industrial products, while the sector shares 17% of the total exports income of the country, Chief Minister pointed out.
Saying that Manipur is composed of various ethnic communities having their own unique textile products, O.Ibobi maintained that the handloom products of the state are famous both inside and outside the country.
He expressed confidence that there is scope for development of fashion industry on the basis of products of various ethnic groups in Manipur.
While stating that the training programme on designs to be conducted for a year will be helpful in giving employment to the youths, the Chief Minister assured the ATDC to provide possible assistance for its programmes in future.
Govindas Konthoujam, Minister of Industries and Commerce, in his keynote address, stated that ATDC Smart Centre will be upgraded to the level of Vocational Institute to enable its trainees to get jobs of higher posts.
Informing that 500 trainees have lined up for the training programme of ATDC and so far 200 youths have been assisted by ATDC in getting jobs, Govindas appreciated the 'Neetee Clothing Private Ltd, Gurgaon' for providing jobs to Manipuri trainees.
The Industries Minister also assured to help the ATDC in its future programmes.
Virendra Uppal, Chairman AEPC, ATDC and JAM; O.Nabakishore, Additional Chief Secretary of Manipur; L.Lakher, Principal Secretary (industries & commerce); Hari Kapoor, Vice chairman of ATDC; HKL Magu, Vice Chairman of ATDC and Dr.Darlie O.Koshy, DG and CEO of ATDC and JAM were also among others who attended the programme.
