Open heart surgery

Imphal, November 14 2018:
Imphal Heart Institute performed an open heart surgery on a 3 month old baby (weighing 4.2 kg), who was on ventilator support for 12 days.
The baby was suffering from Congestive Heart Failure with large VSD (hole in heart) and Severe Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, conveyed a statement from the hospital authority.
Dr Arambam Athouba, Chief Cardiac surgeon cum Director, Imphal Heart Institute shared that operating babies below 5 kg of weight with Congestive heart failure is one of the most challenging cardiac surgeries and added that such operation is performed only at elite cardiac centres in the world.
He added that the operation was possible with the presence of a dedicated Cardiac Modular Operation Theatre, Paediatric Cardiac Surgical Team and Paediatric Specialist Team to manage the child after surgery.
Dr Arambam stressed on the importance of heart Disease Awareness programme in remote areas of the State.
