A one day orientation workshop on Swachh Bharat Mission was held today under the aegis of Regional Outreach Bureau, Imphal at Wangkhei Yonglan Leirakauditorium.
Former MAHUD Director Nepram Gitkumar, IMC Corporator Yumlembam Lukamani Devi and Regional Outreach Bureau, Imphal AO K Sonikumar attended the workshop as presidium members.
N Gitkumar said that Swachh Bharat Mission is a mission to keep the entire country neat and clean and it is not limited to sweeping or mopping roads.
He said that the Swachh Bharat Mission would be terminated on October 2 next year, the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
There are many stake holders but local bodies are most crucial towards making the mission a grand success before it is terminated next year, Gitkumar said.
There are two main objectives of Swachh Bharat Missionfirst, to make the entire country open defecation free and proper, scientific disposal of waste materials.
The Government of India has been reviewing all the Swachh Bharat Mission activities carried out in all the State every year from January 4.Imphal was placed at the 15th position among all the cities of the country which had population of over one lakh in 2016 in terms of neatness and cleanliness.
Imphal was placed at the 125th position among 434 cities of the country in 2017.But in 2018, Imphal was placed at the 255th position among 4203 cities of the country and Kakching was adjudged the best city among 160 cities of the North East, said the former MAHUD Director.
Regional Outreach Bureau, Imphal AO Sonikumar said that at one point of time, Australian cricket refused to play in India because at that time all the Indian cities were notorious for filthiness.
Train stations as well as market places were obnoxiously filthy and open defecation was a common practice at many places but the situation has improved remarkably after the Swachh Bharat Mission was launched.
Sonikumar said that one major problem for keeping the surroundings clean is the ever growing volume of waste materials.
He also underscored the importance of adopting a scientific approach towards disposal of waste materials.
