New Delhi, September 16 2018:
North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) organised a candle light vigil at North Campus, Delhi University yesterday against the communal incidents which recently occurred in Assam and Manipur.
Individuals from different communities of North-East along with those from the other parts of the country also participated in the event.
A minute's silence was also observed for the deceased.
The candle light vigil protested "the recent communal clashes occurred in Tinsukia district of Assam over a facebook post, subsequent to which provocative rumours were circulated on social media and deliberate attempts were made by some vested interests persons to destroy social fabric of the region" .
NEFIS also condemned the lynching of Md Farooque Ahmad by a mob over suspicion of vehicle theft at Tharoijam Awang Leikai under Patsoi PS, Manipur.
Such incidents occur due to the poor functioning of the police system as well as fallout of the absence of pro-people policies in the regions, said Chinglen Khumukcham of NEFIS in a statement today.
NEFIS appealed all communities of Assam to maintain solidarity in the present situation of communal rift and harmoniously reconcile their differences through dialogue.
NEFIS also appealed to different community organizations to undertake confidence building measures aimed at building communal harmony among different communities.
NEFIS also demanded that an act aimed at the protection of minorities should be enacted at the earliest.
