Imphal, September 16 2018:
Komrem Union (KRU) has strongly condemned the mob lynching at Tharoijam Awang Leikai, under Patsoi PS, in which an individual accused of stealing a vehicle was beaten to death.
A press release issued by the president of KRU today conveyed sympathies to the family members of the deceased and asked why the police personnel failed to take the victim to the hospital the moment they found him.
It mentioned that it is unfortunate that the actions of the people are always influenced by emotions and mob violence is becoming a culture of Manipur.
It is most unfortunate that people think no legal actions will be taken against the mob even if they kill an individual as MLAs/political leaders will protect them, it alleged and urged all MLAs/politicians to refrain from offering any kind of protection to the perpetrators of mob violence/mob lynching in the interest of justice and public order.
KRU further appealed to the people to remain calm as the Government is promptly taking action against the culprits.
It also appealed to the people not to indulge in any activities which justify mob justice and to let the law handle the issue in the interest of justice.
Pointing out that it is high time for proper action to be taken against perpetrators of mob violence by the Government, it claimed that failing to do so will transform Manipur into a lawless State.
KRU then demanded the State Government to constitute a special investigation team as well as a Fast Track Court for speedier trial of mob violence/mob lynching perpetrators and to give adequate compensation to the family of the victim by imposing a collective fine on the locality where the lynching took place.
