HRA thanks NHRC, but decries State Govt

Alleging that Manipur Government did not fully cooperate with the proceedings of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) held here yesterday, the Human Rights Alert (HRA) today said the families of the victims were not able to attend hearing of three-four cases because of the laxity on the part of the Government.
HRA executive director Babloo Loitongbam told mediapersons at Manipur Press Club here that he was sure there would be a new turn on the trait of human rights violation cases in the state since the delegation of National Human Rights Commission has heard several cases and given recommendation on some of the cases.
He also thanked the NHRC for visiting the state and expressed hope that the commission will take more steps in future to deal with serious contravention human rights in the state.
The human rights activist said before the Manipur visit by the NHRC team the state Government was officially informed to ask all the families of the victims to present in the hearing, which the former refused to do so, resulting in the absent of the family members in the proceedings of three-four cases.
"The attitude of the Government shows that it didn't extend full support to the commission," Babloo accused.
Six of the over 40 cases, whose hearing has been done by the commission, has been recommended by NHRC for providing monetary relief to the next of kin of the victims.
