He was arrested by Imphal Police for allegedly using defamatory words against the incumbent Government in a video clip which was circulated in social media.
An FIR was registered against him at Imphal Police Station for the alleged defamatory contents of the video clip.
He was produced before the Duty Magistrate, CJM, Thoubal the next day (September 29) and remanded to judicial custody till October 13 in connection with the case.
Local Meira Paibi group's secretary Angom Tomalei said Ningthoujam Popilal should be released unconditionally.
People across the State set afire effigies of Chief Minister N Biren and other leaders in connection with the MU crisis however there is no incident of arrest.
Tomalei went on to ask what is the big deal about throwing eggs at the poster of the Chief Minister.
The incumbent Government has been behaving like an authoritarian regime as indicated by the indiscriminate arrest of agitators, she said.
He was the Headmaster of Wisdom English School and arresting the Headmaster in front of his students violates the dignity of a person.
It is not right to commit acts of violence in the eyes of school children, she added.
