Pests attack Ukhrul village

Villagers of a remote Ukhrul village have been running from post to pillars to get the necessary help after their paddy fields have been attacked by the swarms of locusts in the recent past.
Thus the standing crops of the village has been destroyed last month.
This happen for the first time in the history of Ramson Khuthak Village which is about 70 km south east of the state capital.
N Ramhenrhing, headman of Khunthak village in a statement available here said that the village is a traditional agricultural village.
After the paddy has been sown and started to sprout, swarms of locusts attacked the plants leaving the fields barren since the last few weeks.As these villagers solely depend on annual agriculture products, The livelihood of these villagers numbering around 250 are at risk as they solely depend on the annual agriculture products.
"The mode of agriculture being Jhumming which shift from one place to another every year", the headman said" .

This year these villagers of 39 houses had cultivated at a particular site or place (Lojat) about 12 km from the village,crossing two rivers�taret lok and hangoi lok" .
It is also said every household of the village used to get around 200 to 250 tins of paddy from their fields in a year.
But the recent damage in their field made them misery.
These villagers through their headman had been making an appeal to the concerned authorities to take up favorable actions in the interest of the village.
This is not the first that the swarms of locusts attacked the state's paddy field.
Earlier the pest have damaged the paddy fields of Tamenglong and Thoubal districts as well when almost ready for harvest has caused serious apprehension not only among the cultivators but also among the general population.
State Agriculture Department is yet to study the situation and find out whether the invading locusts are of destructive types or not.
