Imphal, June 29 2015 :
Deputy Chief Minister and state Home Minister Gaikhangam claimed that villagers affected by the incident of Chandel attack of June 4 have returned to their villages and have resumed their normal lives.
It may be mentioned that villagers of nearby villages where the ambush took place had fled their homes fearing the possible retaliations in the aftermath of the attack, an attack which has been regarded as the biggest blow to the Indian Army after the Kargil War.
In the Question Hour of the Manipur Legislative Assembly session on Monday, Ukhrul MLA Samuel Risom questioned about the present status of the villagers and the security measures taken up for ensuring security to the villagers.
Responding to the MLA, Gaikhangam said that villagers had fled from their villages after the incident.
However, the villagers have returned to their homes at Paraolon, Libong, Moltuk, Challong, Duthang and Kontak Khunthak gradually and have started their normal lives.
Citing that the only few villagers fled after the incident, the Home Minister also said that district police as well as the Army and Assam Rifles have been giving security to the villagers by frequent patrolling and meeting the villagers from time to time.
So far, no untoward incident has happened, he added.
6th Dogra Regiment had also assured that no retaliation to the attack would be taken up against the innocent villagers.
Assistance in the form of transportation and edible items were also given to Paraolon villagers for resettlement.
On the other hand, MLA Samuel Risom also asked about the confirmed report on who did the attack and on the claim that 83 rebels were killed in the counter-offensive operation.
To that, Gaikhangam said that NSKN (K) along with KYKL and KCP were suspected to have been behind the major attack.
In the attack, along with the 18 personnel of 6th Dogra Regiment, one cadre each of NSCN (K) and KYKL also died.
He, however, said that no concrete information is available regarding the number of rebels killed in the aftermath operations.
He also stated that no assistance of relief has been given to the family of the victims of the incident so far.
