Imphal, July 06 2020:
Kangleipak Students' Association (KSA) has appealed to all who are working to include Meitei Mayek in the Indian currency notes to focus on solving the issue surrounding the Manipuri script first.
In a statement, KSA opined that as the matter is very sensitive, discussing the issue with experts is imperative before taking any decision.
Saying that Bengali script is considered as the official script of Manipur as per Manipur Language Act 1979, KSA asked which scripts are they planning to include in the currency notes.
If the Bengali script is represented as the official language of the State in the banknotes, it would be the gloomiest day in the history of Manipur, KSA added.
Continuing that no solution has been brought about the controversy surrounding Manipur original script so far, the student body said that not many Manipuri can read the ancient books written by our forefathers still today though Meitei Mayek has been introduced as a subject in graduation level education.
KSA also stated that hurrying the process to include Manipuri script in the banknotes without resolving the issue will be similar to axing our own feet.
