Imphal, September 28 2016:
The Committee of Civil Societies Kangleipak (CCSK) will hold a function on October 18 in commemoration of the first Assembly session of independent Manipur held on October 18, 1948 .
Speaking to media persons at their Keishampat Leimajam Leikai office this afternoon, CCSK president Arjun Telheiba said that they would observe the day at Hotel Classic Grande under the banner Manipurgi Puwarida Meeyamgi Leingak Leiba Numit (rough translation: day of establishment of people's republic in the history of Manipur) .
October 18, 1948 is an important date in the history of Manipur.
After the British occupation of Manipur in 1891, Manipur became independent on August 14, 1947 .
In the aftermath of the departure of British colonial rulers, the first Assembly session of a democratically elected Government of Manipur was held on October 18, 1948, Telheiba said.
As a part of the commemorative function, an exhibition of photographs of yesteryears collected by CCSK would also be held on the same day.
There would also be a poster campaign.
The commemorative function is aimed at inculcating awareness about the history of Manipur among the younger generation.
The inter-community conflict seen in the State and the growing fear for the possible loss of identity can be largely attributed to lack of knowledge about the history of Manipur, he added.
