Ukhrul, July 23 2018:
With the authority of SBI and UBI refusing to respond to the repeated approach of Tangkhul CSOs to resolve the protracted banking problems in Ukhrul district, the CSOs have decided to shut SBI and UBI indefinitely.
Tangkhul CSOs comprising of TNL, TSL, TKS, TMNL and four zonal chairmen of Ukhrul District held a meeting at the office of Zingsho Longphang, Ukhrul and unanimously decided to shut SBI and UBI banks indefinitely from July 26 to protest the irresponsible service.
Briefing the media, chairman of Northern Tangkhul villages Association Dearson Chamroy highlighted the reasons for taking the decision against the two financial institutions of the district.
He said, CSOs of Ukhrul have been consistently appealing the higher authority of the banks to improve the banking system taking into account the hardship and inconvenience faced by the people.
However despite the numerous appeals and reminders, there has been no positive response from the bank authorities, he added.
Although the district has been reeling under cash crunch for more than two months, the authority concerned has turned a blind eye to the situation and has made no alternative arrangements to make cash available, he said.
The people of Ukhrul have been reeling under "no money in ATM booths, and transaction limitations" M Raman also said that although the Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul has allotted rooms for SBI last year, the SBI is yet to be shifted from Somsai.
In spite of the assurance made by AGM, UBI Imphal last year at the TNL office to instal new VSAT for uninterrupted Internet banking service, there has been no improvement.
Again despite his assurance to appoint more staff for UBI Ukhrul, two bank officers were transferred out on deputation.
Until the authority takes up necessary measures to improve the banking services, the Tangkhul CSOs will intensify the agitation in different forms, he said.
