Tamenglong, December 03 2018:
Wild orange (Citrus indica) locally known as Biuriangthai was recently documented from Chingkao village, Tousem sub division, Tamenglong district on November 30, this year, by a team headed by DFO Tamenglong, Arun RS.The finding was made when the team was exploring Chingkao village forest for possible tiger track, adding the list of places where the species can be found.
The team comprised of Honorary Wildlife Warden Tamenglong, Nehemiah Panmei, RFO Tamenglong and Tousem, Kh Hitler, RO Tamei, S Khogen, Harif Parengal from Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History and Mordecai Panmei of The Corbett Foundation and members of Rainforest Club spotted the wild orange and did possible documentation on the spot.
Wild orange is not something new to the locals, what makes it important is the fact that the presence of such species in the district makes it one of the two known location in India, the other being Nokrek Biosphere Reserve in Meghalaya, said one of the team members.
Expressing his views on the recent discovery, Mordecai Panmei said that Tamenglong has been neglected by the scientific community regarding documentation on biodiversity, despite being an orange district.
The species was first documented at Dailong village, Tamenglong district, by a team of field biologist and researchers of Centre for Conservation of Nature and Cultivation of Science (CCNCS) in May, 2016 .
