Employ local labourers, ask organisations on eve of May Day

Many organisation have appealed all concerned not to employ skilled and unskilled labourers from outside but to engage local workers.
In a joint statement issued by Pangal Street Vendors Association (PSVA), Pangal Domestic Workers Association (PDWA), Pangal Workers Union (PWU) and All Manipur Muslim Organisations' Coordinating Committee (AMMOCOC), while extending May Day greetings urged all in the working class to join hands and work collectively for their rights, a better livelihood and socioeconomic conditions.
The working-class people including domestic helpers, commercial sex workers, street vendors and those who had to keep waiting across corners of city areas for some meagre work are facing or subjected to unhealthy working environment and uncertainties of their employment, the statement said while adding that the COVID-19 pandemic has added woes to these section of people.
Despite all these conditions, there is no provision to safeguard the interest and livelihood conditions of these workers, it said.
To alleviate all the suffering of the lpcal workers to a bit, the State should engage local workers rather than importing skilled and non-skilled labourers from outside, the associations continued.
The associations also urged all to give labourers the respect they deserve, know their values and stand by them for their rights.
