Imphal, February 19 2018:
Socialist Students' Union Manipur (SSUM) has demanded the Catholic school authorities to clarify how the number of students studying in their schools are far greater than the number of students admitted through lottery, within five days.
Speaking to media persons at the organisation's office at Keishampat today, Naorem Tanoranjan, convenor of SSUM'S publicity and propaganda committee alleged that SSUM as per its observation of the Catholic schools present in the State, has found that they have a big hand in creating a tense and uneasy atmosphere in the State whenever the time for admission draws near.
He claimed that although Nirmalabas School held a lottery for only 100 seats, SSUM found 90/90 students in Section A and B during the academic session, and demanded Nirmalabas School as well as other Catholic schools to clarify how the number of students in class are far greater than the number of students selected through lottery, within five days.
He further urged the Catholic schools to organise their lottery at other appropriate place instead of blocking roads for the lottery and creating disturbance for the people.
On the other hand, the convenor mentioned that SSUM volunteers came across many cases of cheating and other malpractice during the Higher Secondary Examination 2018, which began today.
He claimed that at Fancier Higher Secondary School, Thoubal, the volunteers found the flying scouts from COHSEM's side as well as some teachers ignoring their duties.
SSUM volunteers also found students resorting to widespread cheating and using WhatsApp (on mobile phones) to send answers in the classroom at N Tomchou Higher Secondary School.
The volunteers were able to seize many notes and mobile phones from the said exam centre, he added.
Tanoranjan further said that the volunteers came across large scale cheating during the exam at Biramangol College and most of the students were not even wearing proper uniform.
On the other hand, SSUM volunteers found the examination being held peacefully at MEM Higher Secondary School, he added.
Mentioning the SSUM vehemently condemns the use of unfair means during the examination as well as any form of unfair assistance provided by the invigilators or the teachers, Tanoranjan said that the association will urge the authority concerned to take up necessary action to prevent such unwanted incidents from happening
in the future.
