Imphal, April 15 2019:
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of violating the election code of conduct and misusing its power in the election campaign for the 17th Lok Sabha election.
Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhawan today afternoon, ex MLA Kh Ratan said that various political parties are campaigning for their respective candidates for Inner Manipur election but the ruling party, BJP, has been violating the election model code of conduct laid down by the Election Commission of India.
Alleging misuse of police forces by BJP, he claimed that yesterday an election campaign meeting of BJP was held by blocking the road at Bashei Leikai after the organisers failed to get permission for organising the meeting at Mayang Imphal Bengoon area.
Regarding the incident, MPCC made a formal complaint to OC of Mayang Imphal PS but no action was taken up as per the law for violating the election code of conduct, he added.
The said election campaign of BJP blocked the road of Mayang Imphal Bashei Leikai and the event was attended by CM Biren himself, his Council of Ministers, he alleged adding that it was later revealed that the permit for the meeting was issued by Kayamuddin, Councillor of Mayang Imphal Municipal Council.
Stating that permits cannot be used for holding public meeting by blocking National Highway/State Highway/ District Roads and Public Thoroughfare, he mentioned that on April 12, an election campaign was held for INC candidate O Nabakishore at Mayang Imphal Bengoon Iroi Salam but only after taking a permit and by following all the norms of the election code of conduct.
He then alleged that on that day, some BJP workers led by one Md Zabar Phundreimayum came out to the election campaign ground in a four wheeler vehicle loaded with BJP flags in a bid to provoke and create an unwanted scene.
However, Mayang Imphal Block Congress Committee leaders appealed their party workers and supporters to remain calm so as to prevent any unwanted incident due to the act of BJP workers, he added.
Regarding the matter they have also made a complaint to Mayang Imphal PS but no action has been taken up till date, he claimed and appealed to the ECI to take up timely action against BJP for violating election code of conduct in Mayang Imphal area.
A report has been submitted to the Election Commission Web Portal, he added.
