Imphal, March 28 2017:
The Joint Non Government Voluntary Organisation (JNGVO), Kakching has demanded the State Government to nominate a candidate for the State's lone Rajya Sabha seat from among the people residing in the eight Assembly segments of Manipur valley who are eligible to vote but cannot contest the election for Outer Manipur MP.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, JNGVO advisor P Somorendro said that people of the eight Assembly segments have been denied the right to contest the Parliamentary election since 1952 when the first election was held under the Constitution of India.
It is like treating the people of Khangabok AC, Wangjing-Tentha AC, Heirok AC, Wabagai AC, Kakching AC, Hiyanglam AC, Sugnu AC and Jiribam AC as second class citizens for the past 65 years.
However, Lilong AC, Thoubal AC and Wangkhem AC were brought within Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency when a minor delimitation was effected in 1972 .
On the other hand, the authority concerned issued a notification in 2001 stating that all delimitation processes in the State of Manipur should be halted till 2026, Somorendro said.
As such, all political parties should set aside their differences and unanimously select a Rajya Sabha MP from among the people of the particular eight Assembly segments, he added.
