Imphal, May 26 2015 :
Editors' Guild Manipur (EGM) has condemned the editorial of an Imphal based daily of May 26 issue for unnecessarily dragging them into an irrelevant issue which might tarnish their image.
In a statement, EGM said that selection of news is the right of the Editor concerned and the Guild has nothing to do with it.
Moreover, the news report, which claimed that somebody was trying to influence media houses, was an exclusive story of the newspaper concerned.
As such, other media houses have the right to decide whether to carry the clarification or not on the above mentioned issue, the statement said.
No responsible media house would carry any news item which is defamatory to a Minister without any authenticated document, the statement said and added that in addition to the above mentioned fact, the man who had made all these allegations against the Minister, later issued a statement claiming that the allegations were false.
Had the news report been published, the media house concerned could face defamatory charge for violating Art 19 (2) of the Indian Constitution and Art 2 and 3 of PCI's norms of journalistic conduct.
Editors' Guild, Manipur also appealed to different media houses of the State not to publish any news item or write-up, which may tarnish the image of EGM or show them in poor light to the general public without proper proof.
