Villagers decry land acquisition move

Imphal, October 01 2012:
Residents of Maha Kabui Namching have intensified agitation against the Government's attempt to acquire land for use as firing range for the Assam Rifles.
As a part of the agitation, volunteers of Maha Kabui Namching Youth Club and Women's Society blocked the Keithelmanbi-Maha Kabui stretch of road from 9am today.
Chief of the village, Dijanglung Gangmei said that the staff of SDC Kangchup, who were assigned to demarcate 24.515 acres of land, were blocked from entering the village today.
The Government has been trying to acquire the land as compensation for evicting the AR from Chingmeirong firing range in 2004 .

He added that a large chunk of land measuring 209.98 acres was already acquired by the Government in 1991 .
The acquired land was provided to the AR.
70 pc of the villagers' land were included in the earlier acquisition, the village chief said while also charging that compensation for the same is due till date.
Dijanlung said the villagers would resist any attempt to acquire the land without the consent of the villagers.
