Police Commissionerate system in Guwahati from today

Guwahati, December 31 2014 : With expanding limits and growing challenges, Assam's main city Guwahati will embrace the much- awaited Police Commissionerate system tomorrow ending the 10-year-old administration of Senior Superintendent of Police.

Guwahati will join a few select cities in the country that will have a Police Commissioner for which current Additional Director General of Police (TAP) Jyotirmoy Chakravarty has been appointed.

Today is current SSP Anand Prakash Tiwari's last day in office.

After serial blasts by NDFB rocked the city in 2008, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had announced that there will be a Police Commissioner.

The SSP system was introduced in February 2005 to meet growing needs of the city in maintaining law and order and other issues by abolishing the post of Superintendent of Police, Guwahati.

For operational efficiency in the ever expanding Guwahati city, a few SP posts were created for different divisions under the SSP.

The first SSP of Guwahati was Late R Vijaya Krishna from February 2005 to August 2005.He became again the SSP of the city between January 2007 and November 2008 .

The other SSPs that Guwahati have had so far are Nitul Gogoi, S N Singh, Surendra Kumar, Pradip Chandra Saloi, Deepak Choudhury and Apurba Jibon Baruah.

Tiwari, who joined as SSP in July 2012 after the infamous GS Road molestation incident, claims that the unorganised crime rate in the city has gone down considerably, while there was almost nil incident of organised crimes during his tenure.

"When I joined as the 9th SSP of the city, there were lot of pendencies.

But as I am leaving now, there is no pendency at all," Tiwari told PTI.

He hopes the new system of Police Commissionerate will be able to fulfill the expectations of people of the city.

Asked if he was disappointed for not being a part of the Commissionerate, Tiwari said, "I contributed in whatever way I could.

I want to see this new platform with new people.

At one point of time, ideas exhaust, so new people bring new ideas." Handling some of the major issues and events like Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti's repeated protests, including self immolation of one member in front of Secretariat, all India police chief's conference and smooth holding of many festivals in the city were challenges for him.

He is now given the dual charge of leading the 4th APBn and Commando Battalion.
