For the first time in Manipur, a spine keyhole surgery was performed successfully at JNIMS, on an individual from Churachandpur who had suffered spinal injuries after falling from a tree.
Speaking to media persons today, JNIMS Director Th Bhimo said that a team led by Head of Orthopaedic Unit, JNIMS Orthopaedic Dept, Dr O Guneshwar and Senior Resident (Ortho spine surgeon) Dr Takhellambam Umesh, conducted the first ever successful spine keyhole surgery in the history of Manipur.
He informed that the patient is one Lalpi Vaiphei (49) from Churachandpur who sustained spinal injuries after he fell down from a gooseberry tree.
He was rushed to Churachandpur district hospital but was then referred to JNIMS and the surgery was successfully carried out on June 25, Bhimo said.
The Director explained that the patient was unable to walk and urinate before the surgery but after the surgery was successfully completed, he is now able to walk and urinate properly.
Stating that JNIMS has many talented speciality doctors, Bhimo aid that if proper infrastructure and material are given to the institution, it will be able to provide even more help to the people of the State.
On the other hand, JNIMS Medical Superintendent Professor N Jitendra said that it is indeed a matter of pride that the spinal keyhole surgery was successfully carried out for the first time in the State at JNIMS and added that if the lack of infrastructure at JNIMS is addressed at the earliest, it will be a boon for the people in general.
Dr Takhellambam Umesh conveyed that the spinal keyhole surgery was performed with tools which were borrowed from a company based in Kolkata and added that if such tools had been available at JNIMS, many such surgeries can be performed successfully in the future as well.
In the past, many had to suffer for a long time before operation/surgery was possible which also posed many complications.
But nowadays, most surgeries are done through keyhole which saves time and money, he added.
