Imphal, October 25 2013 :
Human Rights Alert (HRA) has thanked the National Human Rights Commission for recommending a total monetary relief of Rs 32 lakh as compensation to be paid by the Government to the families of victims of human rights violation in six cases of death in police/security forces action in Manipur.
The human rights body also lauded the Commission's decision to take up a suo moto case against the State Government for restricting visitors of Irom Chanu Sharmila from meeting her.
Speaking to reporters, HRA Executive Director Babloo Loitongbam requested the Commission to support Sharmila's cause by exerting pressure on the Government regarding repeal of AFSPA.
However, he said, it is questionable how far the recommendations of the Commission would be translated into action in the State where even the directives of Supreme Court are not followed.
Urging the Commission to enquire the progress of the steps taken up the Government regarding its recommendations from time to time, Babloo said that HRA would also closely monitor the matter.
Representatives from human rights, RTI, child rights bodies and health activists were also present at the press conference.
