Imphal, August 22 2012:
The All Manipur Tribal Union (AMTU) has compared the prevailing situation of the North East India with those of Romans' gladiators' days with militant groups on killing spree in the region which have been amused by certain section of politicians, public leaders and some government agencies.
Romeo Bungdon, general secretary of AMTU said the present turmoil among underground organisations in the north eastern states of India is not different from the gladiators' events in the history of Rome.
While appealing the various conflicting groups to shun violence, the AMTU general secretary recalled how the Roman rulers were adicted to the gladiator events.
"Gladiators were the weaponry specialised fighters who would fight each other until death just to amuse the Roman rulers.
It is found in the history channel that gladiators were drawn only from slaves.
So when these slaves accepted the status of gladiators they were given certain social status higher than slaves and somehow honoured. They were provided with nutritional food but according to forensic test on their remains, calcium extracts from beans were found. So, it is evident that gladiators were mostly fed with beans and not any meat.
As such , in order to acquire such better social status with better free diet of nutrition and get freedom from bondage those slaves would opt to join the trade of fighting till death.Remember, these slaves were those of the captive warriors of different kingdoms like our NE people from different states.
Thus at every gladiator event of fight many died a savage death where the Roman audiences amused themselves as an entertainment.
They got married but they left behind so many widows. The event of the fight would turn even same brethren to kill each other with no option," Romeo Bungdon stated philosophically.
The AMTU leader then cited a case of Roman emperor Commodus who himself was very addicted in this game of fight and performed personally but his opponents were made to use blunt weapons against him.
"So please understand the moral of my story.
Similar things are happening presently among various groups just at the amusements of some politicians and some government agencies.
By committing these, the common goal for development and civilisation if left afar.
Hence, it is a humble appeal to every factional group of the north east region to shun violence but pursue revolution or civilisation through human resources wisdom in a more democratic and peaceful way like Gandhi and Mandela.
Lest, we are all being fed with so arrogant jealous ideologies that we fight among ourselves mostly for domination over each other," the tribal union leader said.
"Development is an achievement indeed.
Achievement comes through courage.
Courage is generated by unity.
Unity is an essence of fraternity.
Fraternity thus comes from respect and honour to one another irrespective of both great and meek.
If this piece of philosophy is maintained by banishing away one's greed most objectives shall be accomplished," he stated.
