To commemorate India's victory against Pakistan during the war of 1971, Vijay Diwas Day 2018 was celebrated at the first Battalion Manipur Rifles Banquet Hall today.
Speaking as the chief guest, Chief Minister N Biren Singh lauded the civilian programmes taken up by the Assam Rifles and Army in the State for improving the lives of students, youth and general populace.
He said that Assam Rifles and Army continuously provide medical facilities to the people by organising free medical health camps in remote and far flung areas.
With an objective to know India more, they are sending the State's students and youth to other parts of the country apart from providing knowledge exchange programmes.
Since such programmes are good, the Government will support and help them definitely by providing whatever requirements they need, the Chief Minister added.
He said that the SSB personnel and Home Guards were given training and sent to Bangladesh (the then East Pakistan) for helping the Indian soldiers during the 1971 war.
Many of India's air fields were attacked by the Pakistan army and many soldiers laid down their lives.
After the victory of that war, on December 16, 1971, Bangladesh was liberated.
The whole world knew that in-spite of India's victory over Pakistan, India didn't occupy Bangladesh.
If India didn't liberate East Pakistan, history might have gone on a different direction and there may not be any Bangladesh, the CM added.
It may be mentioned that the victory of the war and selfless sacrifice of the Nation's brave soldiers in the Indo-Pak war of 1971 is remembered and honoured on December 16 every year by celebrating Vijay Diwas Day.
As yesterday was a holiday, the Government is celebrating the Vijay Diwas today, the Chief Minister continued.
Agriculture Minister V Hangkhalian graced the occasion as the president.
Artists of Shri Shri Balmukunda Dev Government Music College presented the opening and closing songs, the lyrics of which were based on the beauty of the country.
Cabinet Ministers, MLAs, Chief Secretary, Additional Chief Secretaries, top civil and police officials and officials of different Departments attended today's Vijay Diwas programme.
