Imphal, August 31 2012:
The Joint Students' Coordination Committee (JSCC) today demanded both Manipur and Chandigarh governments to unveiled the mystery behind the death of Pangambam Ravi, a BA 2nd Year student from Khurai Ningthoubung Leiai, who was found dead in a jungle in Chandigarh on August 29 after remaining traceless since August 25 .
Addressing a press meet in this connection at the head office of AMSU located inside DM COllege Campus here today, JSCC Member Th Suresh asserted that students and other people from North East region are facing racial discrimination and threats from people of mainland India despite numerous assurances given by the Central government for their protection.
As many of the cases of murder of NE students in the major cities of India are remaining unsolved, the mysterious death of Ravi would surely affect the mindset of the NE people, particularly the students studying in major Indian cities.
So, the Chandigarh government should bring out the truth behind the death of Ravi, Suresh demanded.
Convener of JSCC, L Umakanta pointed out that students from Manipur go to other states for higher education due to lack of good institutions for technical courses.
Only if the state government is committed enough towards establishing such institutions, there would have been no question of students going outside the state.
So, in order to prevent such incidents in future, the state government should establish institutions for technical courses in the state.
Arambam Thoithoi, another JSCC Member, said that students of the region should not indulge in any activities while studying in other states which may bring shame to the region.
Besides, parents should regularly check the behaviour of their children and monitor the situation in which they are staying.
He also appealed to the state government for an alternative arrangement for continuation of the studies of those students who return home following threats.
