Five hurt in poll violence

Imphal, April 18 2019:
Five individuals including three polling personnel were injured in a poll related violence that broke out at 6/10 Kyamgei High Madrassa polling station of Keirao AC at around 11.30 am today.
CRPF personnel deployed at the polling station opened a few rounds in the air to control the situation and they also baton charged the mob.
Those who sustained injuries included the presiding officer, polling officer number 2, one Ajit Khan of Kyamgei Awang Leikai and a woman.
According to the presiding officer, a heated altercation broke out when he objected a proposal made by a polling agent to allow one individual cast vote on behalf of another person and this was followed by a scuffle.
The presiding officer said that he was only doing his duty to conduct the polling according to rules.
On the other hand, some people who were present around the polling station said that the incident resulted from late start of polling, prevention of voters from casting votes by the presiding officer and polling officers on unreasonable grounds and indecent gestures made by security personnel to women voters.
A large number of police personnel rushed to the polling station to control the situation.
