MPCC fetes Mayor, Dy Mayor, Corporators, Members

felicitated the newly elected
Mayor, Deputy Major,
Corporators and Ward Mem-
bers in a function held at the
Congress Bhavan, BT road
yesterday.
The felicitation programme
was attended by Chief Minis-
ter Okram Ibobi, Deputy
Chief Minister Gaikhangam,
Manipur Pradesh Congress
Committee president MLA
TN Haokip, Ministers, MLAs
and other party members.
The Imphal Municipal
Corporation's newly elected
Mayor Salam Sunil, Deputy
Mayor Maibon Phaomei, 16
Corporators and 19 Ward
Members were presented with
a stole and bouquet at the
felicitation function.
MPCC had planned to or-
ganise the felicitation function
immediately after the elected
members took their oaths, but
the plan was deferred consid-
ering the social issues
prevalent in the State, Chief
Minister Okram Ibobi said.
The roles of the elected
Mayor, Deputy Mayor,
Corporators and Ward Mem-
bers in a democratic set-up,
for both urban and rural ar-
eas, is preset, the CM said.
With the general election
approaching, elections cam-
paigns could be said to have
already begun.
The party
must work harder to increase
its strength, he stated.
The results of the recently
held IMC elections evidenced
the people's unwavering trust
in the Congress party.
In the
2012 general elections, cer-
tain groups forbade the
Congress from taking out
election campaign rallies and
organising public meetings.
The results, however, proved
that choice cannot be forced.
The Congress Government
will soon release the list of its
achievements, earmark
projects to the public, the CM
said.
"We do not want to give
false promises like the BJP or
other party", the CM said.
The Chief Minister also
lashed out on the NDA Gov-
ernment for changing the
Look East Policy to Act East
Policy.
"The NDA Govern-
ment might have thought that
the name 'Look East Policy'
would slow down growth and
development," he said.
Different Union Ministers
have visited the State and non
of them made any arrange-
ment to sanction funds for
any schemes, the CM alleged.
The Chief Minister further
alleged that there has been not
a single development in the
two year's rule of the NDA
Government.
During the rule of the
UPA Government, steps were
taken to make drinking water
available in abundance in
Imphal city under the Nehru
Rural Mission.
After the
NDA Government came to
power, the Nehru Rural Mis-
sion was renamed into
AMRUT scheme.
The alloca-
tion of food grains in
subsidized rate under the
National Food Security Act
was introduced in the times
of the UPA Government, the
CM said.
The initiative was
first introduced when the rate
of food grain (especially rice)
reached Rs 15 per Kg.
It was
decided during the UPA rule
that the Fair Price Shop will
distribute food grains to the
people provided at a subsi-
dized rate by the Government.
"It is okay that the NDA
Government is taking credit
of an initiative started by the
UPA Government.
But they
should not look for their profit
in such initiative that targets
to serve the poor people", the
CM said.
The current law and order
of the State are keeping off
industrialists from entering
into the State, Chief Minister
O Ibobi lamented.
Earlier, the
Government promised to pro-
vide, and in some cases
provided, financial subsidy of
30% to eligible enterprises
seeking to set up malls or
hotels in the North Eastern
States with a view to promote
the development of the indus-
trial sector.
He said the State Govern-
ment will approach the Prime
Minister and other Union
Ministers to seek provision of
subsidy schemes for the de-
velopment of industrial sector
in the State.
About 50 crores have been
sanctioned by the Central
Government for provision of
drinking water under the
AMRUT scheme, the CM
said.
He advised the elected
Mayor, Deputy Mayor,
Corporators and Ward Mem-
bers to take up developmental
works in their respective
Wards without waiting for the
NDA Government.
Speaking at the function,
Deputy Chief Minister
Gaikhangam said IMC
Corporators have immense
responsibilities towards the
development of Imphal city
and surrounding areas.
"The people's trust in the
Congress is still intact.
They
know that no other party can
rule the State", Gaikhangam
said.
