Imphal, November 21 2014 :
With a call to all groups and individuals concerned not to cause disturbance to the developmental works implemented along the historic Old Cachar/Tongjei Maril road, a public rally was held today at Khoupum in Tamenglong district.
Around 1500 people including students of Khoupum area and villagers under Nungba subdivision took part in the rally.
The rally, jointly organised by Khoupum Area VA Council, Zeliangrong Students' Union, Khoupum area, Rongmei Lu Phuam and Zeliangrong Youth Front, began from Thanagong ground and converged at Khangsinlung Hr Sec School premises where a public meeting was also held.
The organisers said that people of the area have been craving for improvement of the road for many years.
The Govt has been urged repeatedly to improve the road since a long time back.
But sadly not long after the commencement of the development work, some miscreants had burned down a land excavator and a roller engaged in the work on Nov 2, they said.
The rally also vehemently condemned such 'anti-development, anti-people, anti-social and anti-National' activities.
Addressing the public meeting, convenor of KAVAC, Achung Riamei said that the Tongjei Maril road had remained unattended for quite a long time until the State Govt started development work of the road recently.
Unfortunately, some antisocial elements had destroyed the machinery engaged in the work on Nov 2, he said while urging all concerned not to cause disturbance on the much-anticipated development work along the road in future.
RLP convenor Diana said that the development work of the road was undertaken with funding from NEC and ADB at the initiative of the State and Central Govts.
Two private companies are assigned the construction work of the 53 km long road from Bishnupur.
She said that the aspiration of the public concerned is to complete the work smoothly.
She also appealed to all concerned to respect and honour the wishes and aspirations of people of the area.
It may be mentioned that progress of the road improvement work was stalled after some miscreants razed an excavator and roller engaged in the work on Nov 2.However, the two companies have resumed works on Nov 9 in the interest of the public.
At the same time, the public meeting today also resolved among others to extend possible assistance to any developmental works/National projects implemented by the Govt for the betterment of the people.
The public also resolved to face any disturbance caused to National projects like Bishnupur-Tupul, Joujangtek-Rengpang (Nungba) roads construction.
The meet also resolved that the private companies engaged in development projects of the area complete their works within the given time.
A memorandum to the CM was also handed through SDO/BDO Khoupum after the meeting.
