Imphal, November 14 2020:
Demanding implementation of the Manipur University Act 2005 in letter and spirit, volunteers of the Joint Students Coordination Committee (JSCC) staged a protest demonstration inside MU campus today.
After staging a sit-in-protest on the main entrance road, the student volunteers marched towards the university's guest house raising several slogans and displaying placards which demanded effective implementation of the Manipur University Act.
On learning that the Registrar and other key officials of the university were present inside the guest house, the protesters gathered in front of the guest house and shouted slogans like, "Implement MU Act 2005 fully", "Implement reservation policy in complete and fair manner", "Release arrested members of JSCC" etc.
Nonetheless, a team of Imphal West district police came to the scene and drove away the protesters.
Talking to reporters, JSCC co-convenor Sazad Buiyamayum reminded that retired IAS officer Jarnail Singh was appointed as the Administrator of MU until normalcy is restored in the university by an order of the High Court of Manipur.
It has been almost two years since the retired IAS officer has been administering the university but there are many lapses and drawbacks in terms of financial management and academic administration, Sazad said.
He said that appointment of a regular Vice Chancellor in place of Administrator Jarnail Singh is one of the key demands of JSCC.
Implementation of MU Act 2005 in letter and spirit, implementation of a non-controversial reservation policy, prohibition on holding three/four different posts by one teacher, reimbursement of examination fees for examinations of which question papers got leaked and examinations which have been aborted due to the COVID-19 pandemic are other demands of the JSCC, said the co-convenor.
Urging fulfilment of these demands at the earliest, JSCC volunteers locked the offices of the Administrator and the Registrar yesterday.
But JSCC convenor Dhanakumar Ningthouja and member Priyananda Huirongbam who took part in the protest demonstration were arrested by Singjamei police, Sazad said.
He also demanded immediate release of the arrested JSCC convenor and member.
