Imphal, March 27 2012:
Police dispersed a rally of anti-AFSPA activists from North East States and Jammu and Kashmir in New Delhi today.
Hundreds of anti-AFSPA activists congregated at Jantar Mantar and held a public meeting denouncing the controversial Act.
Speaking at the meeting, State Secretary of CPI-ML, Sapam Shyamkumar said, AFSPA 1958 is a colonial Act as it was derived from an Ordinance clamped during British rule in India.
The imposition of the Act clearly signifies that Manipur is still under colonial rule.
Representative of Democratic Women Front, Sairem Modhubala said, India has diluted its democratic principles by continuing the draconian Act although Irom Sharmila has been on fast since past 11 years demanding repeal of AFSPA.
CPI-ML National Secretary KN Ramchandran said that prolonged imposition of AFSPA in the North East and Jammu and Kashmir is not reasonable and does not serve any purpose.
Police dispersed the meeting as the activists tried to take out a rally.
MSAD, Save Sharmila Campaign, Democratic Women Front, Manipur and other support groups jointly organised the meeting.
